English 103: Creative Writing

In this introduction to the craft of creative writing, students will read a variety of classic and contemporary works to examine the qualities of effective writing, learn key writing strategies, complete writing exercises, and workshop their own work. Students will learn about and write in four genres (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama).
English 115: Introduction to Fiction: Creative Writing
Thursdays 6:55 – 10:05 PM
This class will focus on the craft of fiction writing in various forms: flash fiction, short fiction, and longer works. Students will read innovative contemporary fiction (including Gabino Iglesias’ border-noir mosaic novel, Coyote Songs), practice strategies for writing effective fiction, complete writing exercises, and workshop their own work.

This is a composition course with a focus on developing skills in academic writing. Students will learn the essay writing process, techniques for critical thinking and analysis, critical reading strategies, and research methods. This course comes with an additional hour in the computer lab where students can practice their skills, complete assignments, and get extra support from the instructor. The theme of this course is Rereading Los Angeles, and students will have the opportunity to do in-depth critical examination of various aspects of the City of Angels, including a fully documented psychogeography-based research paper about one neighborhood in Los Angeles.
